New PJ's

Before we moved to our new house we lived in a housing estate where we were not allowed poultry, my dream was to live somewhere we could have hens, that dream even influenced my fabric purchases! This is my one of my favourite fabrics and it has been sitting in my cupboard for about 4 years, it has hens on it!

I bought it on ebay and was going to make the kids PJ's with it but, after 4 years of deliberation, I decided to make myself  some instead since I won't grow out of them, hopefully!

I used the Kirsten Kimono top pattern, with slightly lengthened sleeves, for the top and traced my favourite PJ bottoms for the trousers (the legs are the same length, I promise!) .

I love them but won't be able to wear them until the weather warms up a bit, it is too cold for short sleeves at the moment, especially when you have a husband that keeps changing the heating timer to save oil!

Meet the new additions

Over the summer 2 of our 4 hens died and since they rely on numbers to keep the coop warm in the winter it was time to 'top up'!

We decided to re-home ex-commercial hens (they were ex organic free range) again and got them from Wing and a Prayer who are excellent.

We went for 3 hens and came home with 4 hens and a young silky cockerel!

The new hens are called Rosie, Anna, Elsa and Laya and the cockerel is Anakin!

We are all in love with Anakin, he is so fluffy at the moment and hopefully he won't get too much bigger so will have a nice quiet doodle doo that won't wake us at 3am in the summer...

4 New Additions and Happy Easter!

I thought it would be a few weeks until we got the new additions but we collected them yesterday afternoon and they have been settling in well, they even gave us 3 eggs this morning, perfect for Easter morning!

Yes, we were all out first thing, -1.5C in our PJ's excited to see if there were eggs :)

We are hoping the bunny and hens will become friends so they can share a run, they are a little unsure at the moment...!

Hope you have all had a great Easter, ours has been fun, a nice service at church, a family meal of roast chicken (which felt a little wrong...) then lemon curd pavlova and chocolate galore. I have a feeling the scales will be going in the wrong direction in the morning...!

Some Easter Hens!

 

We are getting real hens soon, hopefully in the next month or so, but in the mean time I have made a flock of beany hens!


I used this tutorial and made 6 hens, the kids love them and they don't sit on the shelf I put them on for long :)

They were super quick to make, I made all of them in a couple of hours ( I stuffed them with 2/3 stuffing, 1/3  rice) and to tempt you even more they are a great scrap buster for those useless bits of fabric you can't part with, or is that just me....!

Now to attempt a Simnel cake and Easter meringues like they made on the Great British Easter Masterclass the other night!
