Many Pairs of Trousers

Those who follow on instagram will know that over the last few weeks I have become  mildly obsessed with making trousers. Not all bad since my trouser collection a few weeks ago consisted of one pair of red M&S trousers that stretch out of shape in about 30mins.

It all started with this attempt at cropped trousers.

I have worn them a few times but they annoy me and are just not right so I bought the Jocole skinny pant pattern as it has a thinner leg:

This pattern has a secret though - a jersey waistband! I thought this would be perfect, comfy but smart.

The pattern says to choose a size by hip measurement so I cut a 12 and made up a muslin. I couldn't get them over my calves... I ripped them apart and sewed them with a smaller seam allowance and they were marginally better but the legs were still tight in funny places and there was masses of extra fabric under the bum.

This got me on google and, after a few false starts, came across this post by Cation Designs. Every possible trouser alteration is here!

Then the pattern hacking began. I decided I needed a full bottom adjustment, knock knees adjustment, large calf adjustment and a reduction in the curve of the front crotch. Phew.

I measured the pattern and compared to my actual measurements then altered it accordingly, it's a wee bit messy now...

I then took the shape of the leg and drafted a proper waist with darts and a side zip so I  now have my very own trouser block. Stupidly excited by this...

When I made the first muslin with the alterations I actually danced around the house - it worked and they fitted really well.

So far I have made one pair with a jersey waist and one with a normal waist in stretchy fabric and one with a normal waist in non stretchy.

Normal waist non stretchy fabric.

The spotty fabric is stretchy so I have had to take it in considerably and now have another pattern block for stretchy fabric.

I bought a denim and floral fabric to make another two stretchy pairs, I might attempt to put pockets on the denim pair to make them more like jeans. In fact I might get carried away and make a jeans block with front fly but that might be going too far...

Anyway, I have always wanted to be able to wear trousers that are comfy and fit properly but, as I now realise, my trousers have to be a very odd shape to fit when on....

I didn't realise I was such an odd shape until I started this mission... I just hope mu knock knees aren't this pronounced in real life :)

The quest for the perfect trouser...

I am on a mission to make the 'perfect' trouser. So far I have failed. I thought I was on to a winner when I bought V8961, this is the picture in the latest Sew Today magazine:

They look slim but not skinny and have a side zip so a nice clean line. I bought some navy and white polka dot cotton to make them in but did a trial run in a black cotton I had in the stash. Thank goodness I did as they are not exactly as pictured...

I didn't take a photo in the original state but at first I cut a 16 at the waist and went down to a 14 for the hips and legs. They were baggy in the legs, not at all how the official picture looks, and had enough room in the front crotch that I could have hidden anything down there....

I ended up taking them in up the front crotch seam and tapered the outer leg seam in so it is narrower than the size 8 at the hem. This is what they look like now:

They are ok, wearable, but just ok. There is still loads of excess fabric at the back of the leg and at mid thigh. I'm now undecided whether to actually use this pattern at all or try and draft my own. I bought the burda pattern blocks so think maybe this is the way to go.

Anyone have any suggestions to fix this pattern or on drafting my own?

Hippy/Retro/70's Summer Trousers

With great anticipation of a wonderfully summery summer heading our way (fingers crossed although we are still getting some snow..) I decided to tackle one of many gaps in my wardrobe, trousers in a material other than denim!

I got this

fab fabric from my mother in law (she thinks it is Liberty from the 70's) a while ago and bought this

pattern (dated 1969) on ebay last month.

Put them together and you get these

some super hippy looking light weight summer trousers.

Wool jumper shows what the weather is like, birkinstocks were only for the photo:)
The are extremely high waisted, almost hitting my ribs high, so I didn't bother with the waistband and used it as a facing for the new waist of the trousers. They were a tad snug, I have no waist definition, so I had to remove two darts for the waist and take in the hips for the perfect fit! Hopefully the 14lbs that are going to magically disappear before a wedding on the 30th June will mean I can reinstate the darts in the waist :-)

Boy's linen trousers

Using the same method as my ladies shorts to boys shorts I made these linen trousers for Big E from a pair of my linen trousers I had shrunk! In fact they were the trousers I wore to Big E's christening!

Big E always has trouble telling the front and back of his trousers if there is no label so I made up some labels,

Not very clear but they should look like this
I love Highland cows, can you tell?!
